There has been a misconception among many that formatting your hard drive many times damages it. If this would have been the case, then right now I should have been using another hard disk. I bought my computer few years back and I’ve formatted is so many times that I don’t even remember. Just a day after I bought it, it’s ‘ntldr’ file was missing and the OS didn’t boot. At that time, I didn’t have any idea about it… so I formatted my hard disk. Few days back, same kind of problem occurred and I took my computer to the retailer from where I bought the computer from. They too formatted the hard drive. Some months back, I had to format it again due to virus. After that, I stopped counting how many times I formatted?
I had studied in one of my subject that the head of the hard disk don’t even touches the platter while reading or writing from it. There is a very small gap between the head and the platter. Same is the case with formatting. The head actually never touches the platter. So, there is no possibility of the disk being damaged. The only possibility that I’ve seen is if somehow the dust got into the hard disk, it may scratch the platter – called bad sector. Else formatting your hard dick often and installing a new OS improves the computer performance.
