WAP

Many must be familiar with the acronym WAP but little knows what it really is. WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) is the system that integrates mobile phones with internet. Initially it was used only by Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola and phone.com, now it is being used by hundreds of members. A WAP device can’t just be a mobile phone. Even a PDA, a notebook can be a WAP device. Its basic idea to use the existing digital wireless infrastructure Users can literally call up a WAP gateway over the wireless link and send Web requests to it. The gateway then checks its cache for the page requested, If present, it sends it; if absent, it fetches it over the wired Internet. Still people don’t like to use internet over the tiny screen, paying by per minute. So, WAP was flop in a sense. However, new version of WAP, WAP 2.0 is working on some new technology and may be bit hit.
