VOD is an acronym of “Video on Demand” which is similar to electronic video rental store. In it, the selection of channel is made at home using the TV set’s remote control and the video starts immediately. But the inner process is much more complicated than it looks. If VOD is going to be a complete success, then the customer has to be able to start, stop and rewind the video at will. Giving users this ability virtually forces the video provider to transmit a separate copy to each user. Since, this is very difficult to achieve in reality, the concept of near VOD has been brought forward in which pause/resume isn’t possible but a viewer can switch to another channel and see the same video 10 minutes back. In this some material will be repeated but no missed. This offers the potential for lower costs because the same feed from the video server can go to many users at once.
